How "Best" Is Measured
There is no official ranking of NZ schools. However, key indicators include:
- NCEA Level 2 and 3 achievement rates
- University Entrance (UE) attainment
- NCEA Merit and Excellence endorsements
- ERO (Education Review Office) reports
- Equity Index: how well a school supports all students
Data is publicly available on Education Counts, which publishes NCEA and UE results for every school, alongside the school's Equity Index number (the EQI replaced deciles in January 2023 — higher EQI means more funding for socioeconomic need, not better or worse teaching).
A note on reading results: NCEA achievement rates measure how many students passed, so a school's intake matters. A school in a high-socioeconomic area often posts higher pass rates partly because of its cohort, not just its teaching. UE is the most useful single number — it measures the share of students meeting university entry requirements (NCEA Level 3 with 14 credits in each of three approved subjects plus literacy and numeracy).
Auckland Region
Auckland has the largest concentration of high-performing schools. Notable schools with strong NCEA and UE results include:

Many excellent schools exist outside the main centres. Hamilton Boys' High School, Hamilton Girls' High School, Otago Boys' High School (Dunedin), Columba College (Dunedin), Tauranga Boys' College, and Tauranga Girls' College all achieve strong results.
How to Verify a School's Results
- Open Education Counts, search the school, and read its NCEA and UE figures for the last three years — one year can be an outlier.
- Read the school's latest ERO report (every state and state-integrated school is reviewed; reports are public).
- Ask the school for its UE rate and NCEA endorsement rates at an open day, and how it supports students below and above the middle.
- Check the 2026 senior school structure: with NCEA Level 1 now optional, ask how Year 11 is organised and how the school is preparing for the post-2028 NCEA replacement.
Important Notes
A school's NCEA results reflect its student cohort: a school in a high-socioeconomic area may achieve higher results due to its student intake, not necessarily better teaching. The best school for your child is one that matches their needs, interests, and learning style. Always visit schools and speak to staff before deciding.

ERO reports evaluate curriculum, teaching quality, leadership, assessment and how well the school supports diverse learners — including Māori and Pacific students. A school can post strong NCEA numbers and still have a mediocre ERO report, or vice versa, which is why reading the latest review is one of the highest-value steps in your research.
Single-Sex vs Co-educational
